Footnotes

  • The Gladstone Service was presented to the Prime Minister in 1883 by the Derby Liberals as a memento of 50 years service to the Liberal party. The dessert service comprised 26 pieces and was designed by Richard Lunn. Each piece was painted with a Derbyshire view by Count Holtzendorf and panels of flowers by James Rouse. The service is believed to remain at Howarden Castle, Chester. A small number of sample plate from the service were made as replicas for special presentation. One is illustrated by John Twitchett and Betty Bailey, Royal Crown Derby (1976), p.182 and another replica plate in colour, opposite p.177
