Footnotes

  • A cabinet cup of the same shape with closely related decoration is illustrated by John Sandon, The Ewers-Tyne Collection of Worcester Porcelain at Cheekwood (2008), pp.130-131 where the portrait of Sappho is shown to have been based on Emma Hamilton. Baxter made many sketches of Emma, drawn from life during his visits to her between 1802-1804 and it is likely that the portraits on this and the following lot are also inspired by her. The jewelling and flower painting on this lot are also probably the work of Baxter.
