Footnotes

  • Provenance: The Alfred Hutton Collection and the Wallace Elliot Collection, sold by Sotheby's 26 May 1938, lot 288 (part). Also sold by Christie's 8 December 1980, lot 39. Illustrated in The Cheyne Book of Chelsea China, pl.20, No.61. Discussed by Bernard Rackham, Mr Wallace Elliot's Collection of English Porcelain, The Connoisseur, September 1927. This was made as a replacement or matching for an earlier Meissen service, confirmed by an old paper label still attached to the saucer, probably written by Wallace Elliot himself, which states that the lot was included with a Meissen service sold at Christie's. Carefully executed matchings of old family services were a specialist of the Derby factory.
