Lot Details
A Caughley milk jug, circa 1792-93
Of 'shanked' or spiral-fluted shape with a bucket-shaped body moulded with twenty four flutes, painted at the Chamberlain workshop in Worcester, a circular panel on both sides painted in a distinctive palette with buildings, trees and a bottle kiln, the panels encircled by fine foliate gilding, a 'L'Amitie' border inside, 8.1cm high (tiny rim chip)

Footnotes

  • This jug is the same shape as lot 179 in this sale, from the important service painted at Chamberlains by Fidelle Duvivier during his brief stay there in October 1792. The painter of the present lot appears to have been influenced by Duvivier's style, for he has included in both landscape panels a bottle kiln so often seen in Duvivier's work.
