The pear-shaped jug from the 'Lion Marked Group' with a moulded upward pointed lip in Continental style, printed in blue with the 'Gazebo' pattern, a formal border beneath the rim, 11.3cm high, crowned rampant lion mark (chip to lip), the tall 'Chelsea Ewer' cream jug spiral-fluted with acanthus leaves moulded around the base and a double scroll handle, printed in blue with Chinese landscape of 'Broseley' type, the 'Fitzhugh' border edged with gold lines, 8.8cm high (fine crack in base of handle) (2)

Footnotes

  • For a discussion about the attribution of the 'Lion Marked Group' jug, see Geoffrey Godden, New Hall (2004), pp.285-294. Although sometimes considered to be early New Hall, there are other possibilities. The mark may represent the crest of the Talbot family, important landowners in Staffordshire.
