After an Oriental prototype with a grooved stalk handle, painted in Kakiemon style with the 'Lady in a Pavilion' pattern of a Japanese lady standing in a formal garden, a bird at her side, drapery hanging from the rim edge, 9.7cm long (broken across and restuck)

  • This pattern originated in 17th century Japanese porcelain wares and was copied by Chantilly and other European manufactories. The Chelsea sale catalogue of 1755 refers to the 'Lady pattern' while the 1756 catalogue includes the 'old japan lady pattern'. These could possibly have referred to old stock remaining from the Raised Anchor period. A Chelsea beaker with its saucer in this combination of shape and pattern was included in the British Museum 'Porcelain for Palaces' Exhibition (1990), p.280, no.328.
