Lot Details
A rare Worcester vase and cover, circa 1758
A rare Worcester vase and cover, circa 1758
Of hexagonal form, painted in blue with 'Mobbing Birds' and the 'Courting Birds', both sides with a landscape vignette featuring a tree, one with preening birds on a branch and billing doves standing in the foreground, the other with two prominent crane-like birds flanking the tree, a variety of birds in flight all around, three larger flying birds on the cover, 39.5cm high, matching TF-type workmen's marks on cover and base (cracked and restored) (2)

Footnotes

  • Only one other hexagonal vase with this remarkable decoration is recorded. Smaller baluster vases with Mobbing Bird decoration are known, including an example from the Barbara Leake collection sold in these rooms on 12 March 2008, lot 108. The Courting Birds design is seen on a series of large round tureens, one of which is illustrated and discussed by Branyan, French and Sandon, Worcester Blue and White Porcelain (1989), pattern I.C.29. This style of elaborate bird decoration, associated with the painter I Rogers, was first discussed by Hugh Tait in a paper in The Connoisseur in 1963. Several hands can be distinguished and there is no doubt the painter responsible for this blue and white vase also worked in enamels.
