Lot Details
A Bohemian intaglio engraved goblet, circa 1850
Overlaid in bright blue, the rounded funnel bowl wheel engraved through to the clear glass, in the manner of Karl Pfohl, with a horse standing in a simple landscape, a palm tree to one side, the reverse with a circular group of seven diminishing lenses, the knopped stem and spreading foot cut with bands of printies and flutes, 28.5cm high

  • Karl Pfohl of Steinschonau in Bohemia was one of the finest exponents of the difficult technique of relief-engraving through thin layers of coloured overlay. He is best known for his horse subjects. For three beakers with horses attributed to Karl Pfohl and similar lenses on the reverse see 'Glass of Five Centuries', Glas Galerie Michael Kovacek, Vienna 1990, figs 164-166
