A Bohemian engraved mug by Franz Paul Zach, circa 1860
Of slightly tapering cylindrical form, the front panel finely engraved with a horse standing alertly in a meadow, other horses behind and an extensive landscape in the distance, the panel framed with Gothic ornament formed from branches and panels of vacant shields, the engraving signed with the initial Z., 14.4cm high (rim chip)

  • Franz Zach (1820-1881) was a leading Bohemian glass engraver specialising in hunting scenes carved in rock crystal traditions. He also pioneered cameo techniques. Zach worked in Munich, mostly for the firm of Steigerwald.
