An unusual pair of joke or puzzle glasses, circa 1750
With air twist stems, the round funnel bowls wheel engraved with a formal border of linked flowerheads above a single sprig, the border cut with a series of tiny holes pierced through the centres of many of the flowers, the stems with a pair of spiral threads outside of multi-ply gauzes, 15.4cm high (2)

Footnotes

  • The joke worked when a host successfully drank from the side of the glass indicated by the leaf sprig, and then passed the glass to a guest whose attempt to drink from the opposite side would inevitably lead to spillage through the concealed holes
