A rare Beilby enamelled small bowl, dated 1765
The rounded form above a low everted foot, painted with an elaborate border of diaper pattern edged by foliate scrollwork in opaque-white, inscribed M+L 1765, traces of gilding to the rim, 7.2cm high and 12.7cm diam


  • Provenance: The A.C.Hubbard Jr. Collection. Purchased at Anderson and Garland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 8 December 1982, lot 498; previously sold at Sotheby's, 10 February 1986, lot 39 and Sotheby's, 30 November 1999, lot 162. Illustrated by Ward Lloyd, A Wine lover's Glasses (2000), p.72, pl.90.

    Only four bowls decorated by the Beilby workshop are recorded. These comprise two large armorial punchbowls - The Margaret and Winneford in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the unidentified armorial bowl, dated 1765, in the Victoria and Albert Museum. A betrothal bowl, dated 1764, in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia, is the closest to the present example
