Footnotes

  • The inscription refers to Sir John Pole, 5th Baronet (d.1766), son of Sir William Pole, MP for Honiton, Devon (d.1741). Sir John fought a bitter and expensive by-election for the Parliamentary seat for Taunton in 1754 but was unsuccessful. An almost identical inscribed wine glass is in the British Museum. The same inscription occurs on English delftware plates, attributed to Bristol, three of which are illustrated by Louis Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), p.130, figs.577, 577a and 577c
