Painted in Kakiemon style with a flowering branch and a single flower, 13.5cm across, crossed swords mark in blue enamel, incised x inside footrim, incised Japanese Palace inventory number N=368-/ W (tiny rim chip)

  • The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace in Dresden lists under number 338: Acht Stück gemuschelte Chocolaten Becher, mit bunten Blumen gemahlt, 2 3/4 Zoll tief, 3 1/2 Zoll grosz in Diam. und Ein und Dreyszig Stueck darzu gehoerige ausgeschweifte Unterschaalen, 1 3/4 Zoll tief, 5 3/4 Zoll in Diam. No. 338 [eight shell-moulded chocolate beakers, painted with coloured flowers [...] and thirty-one matching flared saucers...] (published by Claus Boltz, Keramos 153 (1996), p. 57).

    A similarly-shaped saucer with different Kakiemon decoration and the same Japanese Palace inventory number 338 was in the Hoffmeister Collection, sold in these Rooms, 24 November 2010, lot 21; another is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (A.L. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum (2000), no. 171).
