The oval cartouche showing a detailed landscape with ruins in the foreground and a smoking Vesuvius in the background, surrounded by a laurel border and continued gilt floral strapwork around the edge of the rim, the elaborate handle with double-scroll terminal, also picked out in gilding, two gold flowers flanking the handle, 6.8cm high, (handle restored, chip to rim)

Footnotes

  • The decoration of this cup is very finely painted and highly reminiscent of Vienna porcelain produced under Conrad von Sorgenthal. The fashion for Viennese neo-classical porcelain came to Naples through the consort of the King of Naples, Ferdinando IV, Maria Carolina of Austria, daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria. Tin glaze was used at the factory between 1783 and discontinued in 1788. The view of Vesuvius from Portici is taken from a print by Claude-Louis Chatelet.

Another cup and saucer of the same refined style of decoration with a tin glaze was sold in these rooms as part of the collection of Procida Mirabelli di Lauro, 6 July 2010, lot 65.
