A Marcolini Meissen cup, cover and saucer, late 18th century
Painted with medallions of figures in rustic landscapes, reserved on a a pale yellow ground, with painted gadrooned borders to the rims, the cup with a square shaped handle edged in gold, titles inscribed in black to the bases, the cover with gilt wreath finial, 13.2cm diam the saucer, 6.4cm high the cup, crossed swords mark and asterisk, two dots to saucer, three dots to cup, in underglaze-blue, impressed numerals, hairline crack to cover, finial restored (3)

  • The painted scenes are based on prints by Raphael Morghen entitled 'Le Lac d'Albano' and 'Les Marais Pontains' circa 1780-84, the prints come from a series of eight depicting scenes of the countryside surrounding Rome, intended for colouring by the Swiss painter Louis Ducros (1748-1810). Examples of these prints along with the other six in the series are in the collection of the British Museum, inv. nos. 1843,0513.632-639.
