A Meissen group of lovers, circa 1745-50
Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the lady seated playing the lute with a recumbent sheep at her feet, wearing a flower-decorated dress with blue bows, the standing gentleman holding a posy in each hand, wearing a white jacket, blue breeches and yellow shoes, the base and tree-stump applied with leaves and flowers, 13.5cm high, traces of crossed swords mark in blue


  • The model is listed in an entry in Kaendler's Taxa of 20 November 1745: 'Ein Groupgen, da eine Schäfferin auff einem Rasen sizt und auff der Laute spielet, neben ihr stehet ein Schäffer, so ihr ein Blühmigem Vergißmeinnicht verehret' [a group of a shepherdess seated on the grass and playing on the lute, s shepherd stands beside her offering her forget-me-nots]; published by J. Rafael, Zur 'Taxa Kaendler', in Keramos 203/204 (2009), p. 66.
