A South Staffordshire enamel snuff box, circa 1760-65
Of rectangular form, the lid decorated with a coloured in print of the Marquis of Granby within an oval and inscribed 'MARQUISS OF GRANBY', trophies of flags behind, the everted sides of the box and the base decorated with painted sprigs of flowers, 7.4cm wide (cracks, some restoration to the cover)

  • General John Manners, Marques of Granby (1721-1770) was a successful soldier although a disappointing politician. The print probably derives from Robert Hancock's version that was adapted from an engraving by Richard Houston, after Reynolds published in 1760
