Footnotes

  • These two plaques are intriguing. 'Gang Warily' is the Clan Drummond motto and means go carefully, but there is a description of an identical enamel plaque in Dr John Doran's Book of the Princes of Wales taken from the Gentlemen's Magazine of 1854. The plaque belonged to a Mr. Chamberlaine, a friend of the Marquis of Granby. Dr Doran believed that it was the badge of the 'Harry the Fifth Club', or 'The Gang', a society started by Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751) with some of his friends. Exclusive and disreputable clubs were popular during the 18th century and it is not surprising to find one using emblems of a gibbet, stock and a hand of glory.
