Footnotes

  • This important dated example was not noted by Louis L Lipski, Dated English Delftware (1984) but fits well into the progression of forms revealed by the dated examples illustrated at pps 200-217. A number of examples dated in the 1680s, 1690s and the very early years of the eighteenth century share the same broad circular foot. An example with very similar handles, dated 1696 and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is illustrated at p 211, pl 934. Only a few examples from this period retain the original crown cover. Another with similar crosses around the rim and on the knop, dated 1700, is shown at p 212, pl 940 and an undated example from the Lipski Collection was sold at Sotheby's, 10 March 1981, lot 40
