Footnotes

  • Mary II (1662-94) was the daughter of James II. After her father was deposed following the 'Glorious Revolution' in 1689 Mary became Queen of England with her husband William III. A companion charger with the portrait of William III is illustrated by Leslie B Grigsby, The Longridge Collection (2000), p62. For a discussion on Brislington delftware and dating, see Michael Archer, Delftware Chinoiserie at Brislington, ECC Transactions vol 19 part 3 (2007), pp. 509-526. Archer addresses the problems of dating Brislington delftware and it is interesting to note that an identical portrait was used for Mary II and for Mary of Modena, James II's wife and Mary's stepmother
