Lot Details
An important London delftware coronation plate, circa 1714
Possibly Vauxhall, accurately painted in blue with the coronation regalia, a crown resting upon a cushion flanked by the initials G and R, an orb and crossed sceptres below, probably to commemorate the accession of King George I, the border with a series of concentric circles and a wider blue band just inside the rim, 21.7cm diam (some glaze loss to the rim)

Footnotes

  • Provenance: Morgan Collection. Illustrated by Michael Archer and Brian Morgan, Fair as China Dishes (1977), p 81. Border decoration composed of concentric lines appears to be a feature of Vauxhall delftware, see the shards found on the factory site illustrated by Frank Britton, London Delftware (1986), p 70, fig 11(G) and (I).
