A good Lowestoft tea canister, circa 1762-65
Of large size and rectangular form with canted corners, one panel painted with a fisherman in a watery landscape, the other side with a Chinaman beside a fence holding a parasol pointing at a tree, one side panel inscribed 'Singlo Tea.', the other side with two circular moulded medallions inscribed 'S' and 'T', framed by 'Hughes' style moulding, alternating with painted flower sprigs, the base painted with a lattice border and with a 'scroll and flower' border at the neck, 12.3cm high, painter's numeral 5

  • Another Lowestoft tea canister of this form was sold in these rooms 18 May 2011, lot 372. A further pair of related tea canisters from the Geoffrey Godden Collection was sold in these rooms 30 June 2010. Inscriptions at the sides of Lowestoft canisters indicated the type of tea they were intended to contain, in this case Singlo tea. Variations exist designed to contain, Green or Gunpowder tea, Hyson tea, Black tea and 'Super Fine'
