Footnotes

  • A closely related pattern is found on a Worcester mug from The Crane Collection, sold in these rooms on 31 March 2010, lot 89 and some similar elements are seen on the creamjug illustrated by Simon Spero, The A J Smith Collection, p 199, number 106. See also the mug in the British Museum where the birds are of a closely related type, illustrated by Aileen Dawson, The Art of Worcester Porcelain (2007), p 54, number 14. This exuberant Chinoiserie style, loosely painted and in a bright palette, was sadly short-lived in the early period at Worcester
