A very rare pair of West Pans baskets, circa 1764-70
Of deep, oval form, the exterior moulded with an ozier diaper, the green rope-twist handles with floret and leaf terminals picked out in colours against a deep yellow ground, the interiors painted in a distinctive palette with central flower sprays within a green border heightened with black arrowhead motifs, tiny scattered sprigs around, the rims with slight traces of cold gilding, 16.3cm and 16.6cm wide (one handle broken and restuck) (2)

  • A basket of the same size and shape, with flowers on a white ground, survives at Newhailes House, near Musselburgh. This was exhibited in the 'Out of the Blue' exhibition, Museum of Edinburgh (2008), p. 18, fig. 13. The exhibition catalogue notes four Littler's Blue-ground examples of the shape, including one in the Victoria and Albert Museum. No other yellow ground baskets are recorded.
