Mars, blue cape
An important Chelsea figure of Mars, circa 1755
Modelled wearing Roman armour with a long flowing blue cape with pink lining, standing with his weight on his right leg with his right hand on his hip, his left hand resting on a large shield behind him before a sprouting tree trunk, on a square base 26.7cm high, red anchor mark (some restoration)

  • Provenance: The Lord and Lady Fisher collection. This figure is illustrated by Severne Mackenna in his book Chelsea Porcelain, the Red anchor wares (1951) pl.55, fig. 109. The figure derives from a Meissen original modelled by Kändler. The 1755 sale of Chelsea porcelain included 'Two fine figures of Mars and Venus', Day 4, lot 31. A later altered version was produced at Chelsea in the 1760s, an example from the Dr. Peter Bradshaw Collection was sold in these rooms 24 January 2007, lot 9
