Portrait box, Frederick the Great? or Old Pretender?
An English enamel portrait box of Frederick the Great, circa 1757-60
Of rectangular form with tooled gilt metal mounts, the lid well-painted with a facing portrait of Frederick the Great on a slate-blue background, the four sides of the box with delicately painted landscapes, a shell on the base, the interior inscribed 'Mag: Rel: Ref: Vindex', 4.7cm wide (some restoration and cracks)

  • Provenance: The Mort and Moira Lesser Collection. The portrait on this box is taken from an engraving by Houbraken after a painting by Antoine Pesne. The same source was used for the popular prints of the King of Prussia used on Worcester porcelain.
