Footnotes

  • Thomas Truxtun (or Truxton) (1755-1820), was an American naval officer, famed for his capture of the French ship Insurgent in 1799 during the Quasi-War between the United States and the French Republic. Admiral George Elphinstone, 1st Viscount Keith (1746-1823), was active during the Napoleonic wars and kept open the trade routes in the North Sea and the Channel. After Napoleon surrendered and was held on HMS Bellerophon, Lord Keith was the intermediary between the fallen French emperor and the British government. Edward Boscawen (1711-1761) is famed as a naval commander and is also remembered as the officer who signed the warrant authorising the execution of Admiral Byng in 1757
