Pierneef's interest in the underlying architecture of nature is explored in this unusual image of a dry river bed which meanders through a characteristic landscape of mountains and trees. The force of the water has shaped the riverbed and surrounding banks into a series of bends, troughs and furrows, softly reflecting the facets of mountains and rocky outcrops. The sculptural effects of natural erosion in the landscape prove an interesting comparison to works such as Pierneef's Premiermyn panel for the Johannesburg Station commission, in which man-made activity has forged its way through the surrounding environment.
