Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
    Acquired directly from the artist
Thence by descent to the current owner

Freida Lock is known for her vivid interiors: most portray domestic interiors, but the current lot provides a glimpse into the workshop of a furniture restorer. Large items of diverse furniture in the foreground create diagonals, leading the eye towards the slightly bent figure of the furniture restorer, hard at work. Swift black accents and broken ochres further frame his figure. The picture depicts Robert, a Malay workman, working in the restoration workshop belonging to the father of the current owner.
