Still life with roses signed and dated 'Irma Stern / 1953' (upper left) oil on canvas 61.5 x 51.5cm (24 3/16 x 20 1/4in).
"No one painted flowers quite like Irma Stern. She was passionate about growing, picking, and painting them and she collected vases for her exuberant arrangements. The Lady's Pictorial describes her 'ransacking all the odd corners of the country for vases that will hold the flowers she loves to paint, choosing them for colour or form, or just because they are odd.'"
In Still life with roses, Stern's enthusiasm for vibrant colours is evident through her contrasting of the flowers with the brightly patterned table covering.
