  • PROVENANCE:
    Private collection

The above work is a portrait of Gertrude Fleiszer and was painted circa 1946. A friend of the sitter of the above portrait has recounted the story of the work's inception:

"The artist saw Gertrude on a Johannesburg street; Maud said she thought Gertrude had very interesting features and could she paint a portrait of her? Apparently, Gertrude did not like the first portrait that Maud painted so Maud then asked her what pastime she enjoyed, Gertrude said 'reading' and so Maud produced the above painting. Gertrude naively thought she could then take the portrait home but Maud said she had not painted it for her but for an exhibition. Later the two became friends and Maud donated the work to Mrs Fleiszer."
