Pierneef was known to return throughout his career to subjects and sites that particularly inspired him. He painted Kranskop from a number of different viewpoints, its faceted surfaces creating a focal point for his compositions. Similarly, the acacia trees of the foreground and middleground not only denote the geographic area Pierneef is painting, but also assist in structuring the scene. Despite the enduring and iconic forms of Kranskop and acacia trees within Pierneef's oeuvre, the painting simultaneously registers change in the autumn tones of the trees, heralding the season's turn.
