PROVENANCE: Gifted by the artist to his friend Mr Stanley Fleiszer in South Africa Private collection
The above work was painted circa 1930, while the artist was in South Africa prior to his departure for England.
Graham Bell was born in the Transvaal, where his younger brother Geoffrey Graham Bell was also a painter. He studied at the Durban Art School and held his first one-man exhibition at the City Hall there in 1931.
He moved to England in 1931 to study under Duncan Grant and so became one of the founders of the 'Euston Road School'. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the South African Air Force and was tragically killed while on a training flight, aged only thirty-two.
