Abstract was painted at an important crossroads in Bettie Cilliers-Barnard's artistic career. In the mid-1950s, she moved from a descriptive, delineated style into the non-figurative forms and abstractions she would become best known for. Abstract was painted in the early stages of this transition and exhibits the figural forms of African animals in a deconstructed and abstracted manner, separate scenes collaged against a monochrome background. By 1956, Cilliers-Barnard was working exclusively with non-figurative imagery and would continue in that style for the rest of her career.
