An undated issue of this very attractive Mitchell wall map. (Rumsey 5122 and 0564 listing dated 1856 and 1860 issues). This New National map developed from the earlier National Map issued by Mitchell of the 1840s. The inclusion of the Sandwich Islands, then an Independent State, indicating the beginnings of broader territorial ambitions for the US in the Pacific and elsewhere, which is probably why the map extends through Central America and the Carribean.
