There is a handwritten note by Jess affixed to the reverse which reads:

    "You are not forgot,
    O plunder of lilies,
    honey is not more sweet
then the salt stretch of your beach."

"The Shrine," Sea Garden, H.D. [Hilda Doolittle]

Ruth Witt-Diamant was a professor of English at San Francisco State University for more than thirty years beginning in 1931. In 1954 with poet Robert Duncan, Jess's partner of thirty-seven years, she founded the Poetry Center at SFSU, which houses one of the largest collections of oral recordings of poets in the world. Poetry, world literature, myth, symbols and archetypes inspired much of Jess's work including this lot, Arising at Dawn.
