Aesthetic Sikhote-Alin with Regmaglypts
Iron 11AB, Coarsest Octahedrite
Maritime Territory, Russia
Representing the rarer type of Sikhote-Alin meteorite, this marvelous specimen boasts numerous regmaglypts, small crater-like impressions that formed by ablation of troilite when the meteorite was streaking through the sky at extreme temperatures. The large meteorite body broke up twice during its fall to Earth with only the breakup at higher altitude creating the specimens with regmaglypts; the lower breakup produced the shrapnel type meteorites. It is quite rare to find such a large aesthetic specimen, as the Sikhote-Alin meteorite field has been well searched and only small specimens are still being found. Offered on a plastic display stand.
