Sculptural Canyon Diablo

Two large, beautifully rounded scoops are seen in this very desirable Canyon Diablo specimen. A heavy patina evidences its many years on Earth after the huge impact of this classic meteorite, the crater from which measures 4,000 feet wide and 570 feet deep. It is hypothesized that the meteorite would have weighed approximately 63,000 tons and would have measured 100 feet in diameter. Most of the mass was vaporized on impact and the rest was blasted into smaller pieces. Canyon Diablo has been closed for many years to meteorite hunters.
