Acasta gneiss is considered to be the oldest rock on Earth, dated at 4.2 billion years. Gneiss is rock that is formed by regional metamorphic processes from pre-existing formations that were originally composed of either igneous or sedimentary rock. The present specimen displays attractive black and rust striations.
