Large Marine Reptile Skull
Stenopterygius sp.

Holzmaden, Germany

A fascinating inhabitant of the Jurassic seas, the ichthyosaur is believed to have filled a similar ecological niche as today's dolphin. Of all known reptiles, ichthyosaurs were best adapted to a marine existence. The present offering exhibits the skull with countless teeth; cervical vertebrae are also seen. This is a large individual for its species.
