A Pathologic Walrus Tusk

The tusk of a walrus that definitely had a tooth ache. This specimen exhibits what is referred to as "osteomyelitis," a condition in which a rugose ("wrinkly") deformation of the original bone, or in this case a tusk, is caused by an acute or chronic infection, possibly bacterial, while the animal was alive.
