Extraordinary Stromatolite Specimen
Strelley Pool Formation, Western Australia
The 3.4-billion-year-old Strelly Pool Formation, one of the oldest outcrops of sedimentary rock on Earth, yields stromatolites that may be considered the oldest stromatolites on the planet. Stromatolites are accretionary structures formed as prehistoric cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) cemented grains of sediment together.
