Stromatolite Slab
Conophytum basalticum
Cambrian
Northern Territory, Australia
A crosswise cut of stromatolite reveals the circular pattern in stone produced by prehistoric cyanobacteria. Stromatolites are accretionary structures formed in shallow water; prehistoric cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) cemented grains of sediment together, forming mound-like structures over millions of years.
