Exceptional Petrified Wood Slab
Araucarioxylon arizonicum
Triassic
Chinle Formation, Arizona
The most desirable specimens of Arizona petrified wood are coveted for their dazzling color, exemplified by the brilliant rust-red and ochre displayed in this slab. Traces of the growth rings of the original living tree are visible toward the center of the slab and watercolor-like patches of ochre are seen. Natural irregular edges represent the periphery of the trunk of a large 210-million-year-old tree. Formed of silicates, this material is very hard and is, therefore, eminently suitable for use as a tabletop. The mirror-polished surface amplifies the magnificent colors.
