Opal Belemnites on Matrix
Coober Pedy, Australia
Five beautifully formed fossil belemnites are distinguished by the precious opal that has replaced the shells of the once-living creatures. Flashing blues and pinks are seen in the lustrous specimens. Belemnites are extinct cephalopods. Like ammonites, they were marine creatures. Coober Pedy has been supplying the world with the majority of gem quality opal available since it was founded in 1915.
