Edicarian Fossils or Pseudofossils on Slab
Presumed Cnidarian
Ediacaran
Ranford Formation, Australia

Whether the patterns on this 560-545 million-year-old slab represent fossils or pseudofossils is a matter of debate. Some would argue that these are cnidarian medusaforms, but others would insist that they are non-biogenically produced artifacts. Organisms from the Ediacaran Period existed almost 40 million years before the Cambrian Explosion. They bear little resemblance to life forms of today; indeed, they are difficult to compare to life forms of the Cambrian. Here is an acquisition sure to stimulate thought-provoking discussion.
