Fossilized Irish Elk Carving of a Skull
Unlike most Ice Age fossils, which are still largely organic, the antler from which this carving is made is completely petrified in a solid form, which allows the detailed carving and superb high polish seen in this unique work. The fossil from which this carving was made was discovered in a quarry by the Dutch town of Arnhem near the German border, famous from the military action dramatized in the film, "A Bridge Too Far." Megaloceros was one of the largest deer that ever lived, standing up to 6.9 feet (2.1 meters) at the shoulders. Its antlers are the largest of any known cervid, growing up to 12 feet (3.65 meters) from tip to tip.
