  • A life-long adventurer Snow (1817-1895) first went to the Arctic in the Prince Albert, as part of Charles Codrington Forsyth's expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. In 1854 he commanded the Allen Gardiner, a vessel commissioned from the Patagonian Missionary Society, in a voyage to the Falkland Islands, where he resided for two years. His book records explorations in the Falklands, Tierra del Fuego and the southern oceans. "The book earned him a little money, but most of it was squandered on a costly three-year court action against the missionary society" (Howgego).
