CAMPBELL GLACIER
'Rough surface on Campbell Glacier', silver gelatin print, signed on photographer's mount by Frank Wild, Griffith Taylor and Raymond Priestley, captioned in pencil on verso and with ink stamp of Mallet & Sons, Photographer & Publishers, The Abbey Studio, Church St., Tewkesbury, 227 x 288mm., [1908?]

Footnotes

  • Campbell Glacier was named after Lieutenant Victor L.A. Campbell, who led the Northern Party of Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. Raymond Priestley was Campbell's geologist in the Northern Party, whilst Thomas Griffith Taylor was senior geologist on board Terra Nova. The two became close friends, Taylor eventually marrying Priestley's sister Doris, whom he met at Priestley's home in Tewkesbury, where the present photograph was printed. But Priestley had also taken part, alongside co-signatory Frank Wild, in Shackleton's Nimrod expedition, and the presence of Wild's signature suggests the photograph dates from the earlier expedition. See illustration overleaf.

Provenance: Christies, 6 May 1993, part of lot 91 (attributing the photograph to Frank Wild on the 1908 expedition).
