Footnotes

  • A narrative of the German South Polar Expedition of 1901-03, whose ship Gauss was the second to winter over in the Antarctic, having become trapped in the ice eighty kilometres from the coast. One of the crew, Hans Harlin, "thought the ship resembled a cosy German hamlet in winter [but despite this cosiness] the expedition brought back such a vast quantity of new scientific material that a final evaluation was not completed for another twenty-seven years" (Howgego).

Provenance: Martin L. Greene (Seattle); from Bob Finch (High Latitude), 1998.
